- Paina Write ISRC (⌘Return).
No supported audio files found (WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC, M4A). Tiedosto, jolla on tuettu pääte mutta jota ei voi lukea äänenä, jätetään pois ja nimetään alapalkissa (Skipped 1 file(s) that are not readable audio: Name.wav); viestissä on enintään kolme nimeä.
Jokainen lisäyskerta tulee listan loppuun. Kansion tiedostot ja Add Files… -ikkunassa yhdessä valitut tiedostot järjestetään tiedostonimen mukaan Finderin tapaan, jolloin numero 2 tulee ennen numeroa 10. Ikkunaan yhdellä kertaa pudotetut irralliset tiedostot lisätään yksi kerrallaan ja voivat asettua eri järjestykseen, joten tarkista File-sarake ennen numerointia. Listaa ei voi järjestää uudelleen.
2. Taulukko
- No ISRC tai Has ISRC: New ISRC on tyhjä, ja tiedostossa ei ole koodia (No ISRC) tai siinä on jo koodi (Has ISRC).
- Ready: uusi koodi on kelvollinen ja poikkeaa nykyisestä. Write ISRC kirjoittaa juuri nämä tiedostot.
- Up to date: uusi koodi on sama kuin tiedostossa, joten mitään ei tarvitse tehdä.
- Not a valid ISRC (punainen): koodi ei ole kelvollinen, ks. kohta 3.
- Used twice in this list (punainen): sama koodi on usean tiedoston New ISRC -sarakkeessa.
Valitse tiedosto ja klikkaa hiiren oikealla: valikossa ovat Remove from list, Remove ISRC from file… ja Show in Finder. Useita tiedostoja voi valita Shift- tai ⌘-klikkauksella.
3. Koodin kirjoittaminen
Mikä tahansa muu kirjoittamasi teksti muuttuu punaiseksi, ja Status-sarakkeessa lukee Not a valid ISRC.
Ainoa tiedostojen välinen tarkistus koskee kaksoiskappaleita: jos sama koodi on usean tiedoston New ISRC -sarakkeessa, kaikki nämä rivit muuttuvat punaisiksi tekstillä Used twice in this list, eikä yhtäkään niistä kirjoiteta, ennen kuin koodit taas eroavat toisistaan. TAGINDX ei myönnä koodeja: rekisteröijän tunnus tulee ISRC-toimistolta.
4. Koko listan numerointi (Sequence)
Sequence… antaa tiedostoille perättäiset koodit kerralla. Täytä Country (2 kirjainta, ISO-maakoodi; alussa FI), Registrant (kolmimerkkinen tunnus, jonka antaa ISRC-toimisto), Year (2 numeroa; alussa kuluva vuosi) ja First number (luku nollasta 99999:ään; alussa 1). TAGINDX muistaa antamasi arvot seuraavaa kertaa varten.
Assign vain täyttää New ISRC -sarakkeen.
The file was not changed.
Keep a backup copy of each file (oikealla alhaalla) on oletuksena pois päältä, ja TAGINDX muistaa valintasi. Kun se on päällä, alkuperäinen kopioidaan samaan kansioon juuri ennen korvaamista: tiedostosta Song.wav jää jälkeen Song (original).wav, seuraavalla kerralla Song (original 2).wav, sitten Song (original 3).wav. Olemassa olevaa varmuuskopiota ei koskaan ylikirjoiteta. Valinta koskee myös Remove ISRC -toimintoa.
6. ISRC:n poistaminen
TAGINDX kysyy Remove the ISRC from the selected files? ja muistuttaa, ettei ääntä kosketa ja muut tagit säilyvät; vahvista valitsemalla Remove ISRC. New ISRC -kentän tyhjentäminen ei poista tiedostosta mitään.
Remove from list ja Clear muuttavat vain listaa; tiedostot pysyvät ennallaan.
7. Tiedostomuodot ja koodin paikka
- WAV (
.wav,.wave): ID3v2-tagiid3-lohkossa, kehysTSRC. - AIFF (
.aif,.aiff,.aifc): ID3v2-tagiID3-lohkossa, kehysTSRC. - MP3 (
.mp3): ID3v2-kehysTSRC.
8. Hinta ja yksityisyys
TAGINDX on ilmainen.
Alapalkki
| Keep a backup copy of each file | Valintaruutu. Kun se on päällä, alkuperäinen kopioidaan tiedoston viereen nimellä Nimi (original) ennen korvaamista (kohta 5). Oletuksena pois päältä, ja valinta muistetaan. | |
| Write ISRC | ⌘+Return | Kirjoittaa jokaisen tiedoston, jonka Status on Ready. Sulkeissa on näiden määrä, esimerkiksi Write ISRC (12). |
Rivin valikko (klikkaus hiiren oikealla)
| Remove from list | Poistaa valitut tiedostot listalta. Levyllä olevat tiedostot eivät muutu. | |
| Remove ISRC from file… | |
| Show in Finder | Näyttää valitut tiedostot Finderissa. |
Sequence-ikkuna
| Country | 2 kirjainta, ISO-maakoodi. Alussa FI. | |
| Registrant | Kolmimerkkinen tunnus, jonka antaa ISRC-toimisto. | |
| Year | 2 numeroa. Alussa kuluva vuosi. | |
| First number | Luku nollasta 99999:ään. Alussa 1. | |
| Assign | Return | Täyttää New ISRC -sarakkeen ja sulkee ikkunan. |
| Cancel | Esc | Sulkee ikkunan muuttamatta mitään. |
Five minutes: the whole workflow
- Drop in your files or a whole folder (or press Add Files…, ⌘O). The table shows each file's format and the ISRC it already holds.
- Give them codes: type a code in a file's New ISRC field, or press Sequence… and number the whole list in one go.
- Check the Status column: Ready means the code is valid and set to be written. Red text means a code that is not valid or is used twice.
- Press Write ISRC (⌘Return). Each file is written to a temporary copy and checked, and only then swapped in for the original.
1. Adding files
Drag audio files or whole folders into the window, or press Add Files… (File › Add Files…, ⌘O) and choose them in the dialog. Folders are searched including their subfolders, and hidden files are skipped. Files you open with TAGINDX from Finder join the same list, and a file that is already in the list is not added twice.
TAGINDX looks at the file extension first (.wav, .wave, .aif, .aiff, .aifc, .mp3, .flac, .m4a, .mp4) and then at the content, which decides the format shown in the table. Files with any other extension, Ogg and Opus files for example, are ignored. If nothing is left to add (there are no supported files, or all of them are already in the list), the bottom bar says No supported audio files found (WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC, M4A). A file with a supported extension that cannot be read as audio is left out and named in the bottom bar (Skipped 1 file(s) that are not readable audio: Name.wav); the message names at most three files.
Every batch you add goes to the end of the list. Files from a folder, and files chosen together in the Add Files… dialog, are sorted by file name the way Finder sorts them, so 2 comes before 10. Loose files dropped into the window in one go are added one at a time and may land in a different order, so check the File column before you number them. The list cannot be re-sorted.
2. The table
Every file is one row, with five columns. File is the file name; rest the pointer on it to see the full path. Format is WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC or M4A. Current ISRC is the code the file holds now, written as CC-XXX-YY-NNNNN, or a dash if there is none; a value in the file that is not a valid ISRC counts as none. New ISRC is the code you want to write: click the field and type, or fill it with the Sequence tool. Status tells you what will happen to the row.
- No ISRC or Has ISRC: nothing is typed in New ISRC, and the file has no code (No ISRC) or already has one (Has ISRC).
- Ready: the new code is valid and differs from the current one. Write ISRC writes exactly these files.
- Up to date: the new code is the same as the one in the file, so there is nothing to do.
- Not a valid ISRC (red): the code is not valid, see chapter 3.
- Used twice in this list (red): the same code is in the New ISRC column of more than one file.
- Writing…, then Written or Removed in green, or in red the reason it did not work (rest the pointer on it to read the whole text).
Select a file and right-click: the menu has Remove from list, Remove ISRC from file… and Show in Finder. Select several files with Shift-click or ⌘-click.
3. Typing a code
An ISRC has twelve characters: two letters for the country, three letters or digits for the registrant, two digits for the year and a five-digit number. TAGINDX shows it as CC-XXX-YY-NNNNN, for example FI-ABC-26-00001, and stores it in the file without the hyphens (FIABC2600001).
You can type a code in capitals or lower case, with or without separators: spaces, hyphens, dots, slashes and underscores are ignored. A code is valid if exactly the pattern above is left once the separators are taken out. A valid code is accepted as you type, and Return in the field tidies it into the hyphenated form. Any other text you type turns red, and the Status column says Not a valid ISRC.
TAGINDX checks the shape of the code, not whether the code is yours. It does not look up the country or the registrant, and it does not know which codes you have used elsewhere. The one check across files is for duplicates: if the same code is in the New ISRC column of more than one file, all of those rows turn red with Used twice in this list, and none of those files is written until their codes differ again. TAGINDX does not issue codes: the registrant code comes from your ISRC agency.
4. Numbering a whole list (Sequence)
Sequence… gives the files consecutive codes in one go. Fill in Country (2 letters, ISO country code; FI to start with), Registrant (3 characters, given by your ISRC agency), Year (2 digits; the current year to start with) and First number (a number from 0 to 99999; 1 to start with). TAGINDX remembers what you entered for next time. The preview under the fields shows the first and the last code. Press Assign (or Return).
The files are numbered in list order: the first file in the list gets the first number, the next file the number after it, and so on. Only the five-digit number goes up; country, registrant and year stay the same. Twelve files with FI, ABC, 26 and 1, for example, get FI-ABC-26-00001 … FI-ABC-26-00012. If only some of the files are selected, the Apply to choice lets you number either all files or just the selected ones; the selected files are numbered in their list order.
Assign only fills the New ISRC column. It overwrites the New ISRC value of every file it covers, whether or not the file already has a code, and nothing is written to the files until you press Write ISRC. Look at the order of the File column before you press Assign: the numbers follow it.
If the start is not valid, or the sequence would run past 99999, the dialog says so in red and nothing changes.
5. Writing the codes into the files
Write ISRC (⌘Return) writes every file whose Status is Ready, selected or not. The number of those files is shown on the button, for example Write ISRC (12), and the button is greyed out when there is nothing to write. The files are handled one at a time: the Status column shows Writing… and then Written in green, or in red the reason it did not work, and the bottom bar sums up the result, for example Wrote 12 ISRC codes. One file that fails does not stop the others. If a file already holds a code it is replaced, so the file holds exactly one ISRC afterwards.
For each file, TAGINDX does this:
- It takes a SHA-256 checksum of the audio data.
- It writes the new version to a hidden temporary file next to the original (
.Name.ext.tagindx-tmp). Large files take a moment, and the folder must be writable. - It reads the code back from the temporary file and takes the audio checksum again. If the code cannot be read back or the checksum differs, the temporary file is thrown away, the original stays as it was, and the Status column says why, for example Verification failed: the audio data would have changed. The file was not changed.
- Only then, and after making the backup copy if you asked for one, it replaces the original with the temporary file.
Everything else in the file is copied across as it is: other tags, artwork and the audio data. The audio data is the part that is checked, byte for byte, before the original is replaced.
Keep a backup copy of each file (bottom right) is off by default, and TAGINDX remembers your choice. When it is on, the original is copied into the same folder just before it is replaced: Song.wav leaves Song (original).wav behind, the next time Song (original 2).wav, then Song (original 3).wav. An existing backup is never overwritten. The option applies to Remove ISRC as well.
6. Removing an ISRC
Select the files and press Remove ISRC (or right-click and choose Remove ISRC from file…). TAGINDX asks Remove the ISRC from the selected files? and reminds you that the audio is not touched and other tags stay as they are; confirm with Remove ISRC. Only the selected files that have a Current ISRC are handled, and they go through the same temporary copy and checks as writing. If none of the selected files has a code, the bottom bar says so. Emptying a New ISRC field does not remove anything from the file.
Remove from list and Clear only change the list; the files stay as they are.
7. Formats and where the code goes
- WAV (
.wav,.wave): an ID3v2 tag in anid3chunk, frameTSRC. - AIFF (
.aif,.aiff,.aifc): an ID3v2 tag in anID3chunk, frameTSRC. - MP3 (
.mp3): ID3v2 frameTSRC. An existing ID3v2.3 or ID3v2.4 tag keeps its version; a file with no tag gets a new ID3v2.3 tag. - FLAC (
.flac): Vorbis commentISRC. - M4A (
.m4a,.mp4; AAC or ALAC): iTunes freeform tagcom.apple.iTunes:ISRC.
TAGINDX reads and writes the code only in these places, so a code stored elsewhere in a file is not shown.
What it does not handle. Files with any other extension, Ogg and Opus for example, are ignored when you add them. WAV files in the RF64 or BW64 variant are not added to the list. The bottom bar names them with the same message as any other file that is not readable audio (Skipped 1 file(s) that are not readable audio: Name.wav); it does not mention RF64 or BW64. A file with an ID3v2.2 tag (an old tag version, in an MP3 or in a WAV or AIFF file) can be added to the list, but its current code cannot be read, and writing to it is refused with a message in the Status column; the file is left as it was.
8. Price and privacy
TAGINDX is free. There is no account, no licence key and no trial. The app contains no network code at all: it never goes online and sends nothing anywhere. The only settings it remembers are the backup checkbox and the four Sequence entries. There is no settings window.
Controls and buttons
Every row matches a real button, field or menu item in the app, and the names are as they appear on screen. On the left of the bottom bar you see the number of files (No files, 12 files) and TAGINDX's messages.
Top bar
| Add Files… | ⌘+O | Opens a chooser for audio files and folders. The same command is in the File menu (Add Files…), and you can also drag files into the window. |
| Sequence… | Numbers the files with consecutive ISRC codes (chapter 4). Greyed out while the list is empty. | |
| Remove ISRC | Removes the ISRC from the selected files after you confirm (chapter 6). Greyed out when nothing is selected, and while writing. | |
| Clear | Empties the list. The files themselves are not touched. Greyed out while the list is empty, and while writing. |
Bottom bar
| Keep a backup copy of each file | A checkbox. When it is on, the original is copied next to the file as Name (original) before it is replaced (chapter 5). Off by default, and your choice is remembered. | |
| Write ISRC | ⌘+Return | Writes every file whose Status is Ready. The number of those files is in brackets, for example Write ISRC (12). While it works the label reads Writing…, and when there is nothing to write the button is greyed out. |
Row menu (right-click)
| Remove from list | Takes the selected files off the list. The files on disk do not change. | |
| Remove ISRC from file… | The same as the Remove ISRC button: asks for confirmation and removes the code from the files. | |
| Show in Finder | Shows the selected files in Finder. |
Sequence dialog
| Country | 2 letters, ISO country code. FI to start with. | |
| Registrant | 3 characters, given by your ISRC agency. | |
| Year | 2 digits. The current year to start with. | |
| First number | A number from 0 to 99999. 1 to start with. | |
| Apply to | Appears when only some of the files are selected: all files, or just the selected ones. | |
| Assign | Return | Fills the New ISRC column and closes the dialog. If the values are not valid, the dialog stays open and shows the reason in red. |
| Cancel | Esc | Closes the dialog without changing anything. |
